How to ensure downloaded software security?

Hello, I always try to run the download .exe / installation files in a virtual environment or sandbox like to limit as much as possible - within my limited technical knowledge - trojan or virus risks. What other security methods you use and would recommend to get closer to 100% safety of downloaded applications? Thanks!
