conglo
There used to be a very well renowned Italian restaurant in our area. I had heard about it for years but never dined there. So, we went. Nice place, great food, high prices. Comes the bill. I whip out my credit card. "No credit cards. Cash only." ??? (this is an established restaurant) "Will you take a check?" Well, this caused a big commotion. Waiter disappeared, lots of discussion. "Okay, we'll take a check, but just this once." When the cancelled check came back from the bank I was curious and looked a the endorsement. It was endorsed with a personal signature from a warehouse owner in the downtown Detroit docks area. MONEY LAUNDERING?? YA THINK??!! We did not return... Thanks, coffee. My wife and my shrink tell me that all the time. The guy did give me a refund and I didn't flame him so all is well. Thanks for your story. I'm "nosy as hell", too, that made me laugh. I had a good friend who bought a restaurant; it took over his entire life. He ended up selling it at a loss and he was one smart businessman. According to the Small Business Administration (SBS) about 90% of all new businesses fail within 5 years; the rate for new restaurants is around 99%. So, I guess you have a better chance with forex than a restaurant. Fart on!! Angelo has been in the restaurant business for 43 years and he and his wife want to retire. Think of a classy neighborhood Steak House with linen napkins/tablecloths, the cleanest washrooms I've ever seen, fabulous food and very affordable prices. Since you're nosy (like me! ... LOL) the first offer was for $ 142,000 but Angelo's landlord wouldn't approve the purchaser. (apparently he had a criminal record) The current highest offer is for $ 115,000 which is an absolutely steal based on his volume of business and location. Unfortunately, Angelo also pointed out that he's at the restaurant about a 100 hours a week ... and when he's not at the restaurant he's thinking/worrying about it. Yes, in comparison ... Forex is easy .... :) :)

My wife and I went once but the server was beyond annoying ... you know the type, he introduced himself, went into excruciating detail over the specials, went over the menu personally and did everything but sit down and eat at our table. When we tried to eat he kept dropping by and interrupting ... I don't know if he was a part time performance artist but the meal was more about 'him' than us. That was our first and only visit. I have heard the place has Mob connections ... (money laundering?) so maybe they try to discourage actual living, breathing customers. For example ... they have a very visible outdoor patio but I've never seen anyone (ever) eating outside ... I also don't know anyone locally who actually goes there. Maybe we were fortunate to make it out alive ... LOL ...
conglo
I live near Detroit (very near.. there's a novel in that alone), there have been rumors for years that many well-known Italian businesses around here are mobbed up. Remarkably, there's a lot of evidence for it as well; I was friends with a woman (just friends), a veteran local television reporter whose husband was an FBI agent assigned here. LOTS of stories. !!! Before any of our Italian members take offense, I'm half Sicilian (mama mia) and proud of it. Se non lo gradite va la scopata voi stessi. I couldn't care less about it either way, I just don't want to get shot. On the other hand, New Year's Eve on the East Side Detroit border is much more dangerous (it sounds like the beginning of Desert Storm). Bring in the dogs and hide in the basement.. have some champagne.. be thankful you don't catch any flak.. There used to be a very well renowned Italian restaurant in our area. conglo
"Don Conglo"... cracked me up.. You've nailed it about the funeral homes.. There's a very well established, high-toned, expensive funeral home in the area that's rumored to be owned by the mob. I knew a woman who had her husband cremated there.. his ashes were returned to her in a used coffee can.. ... <the Godfather theme playing softly in the background ...> ...
