marsya91 Posted November 30, 2011 Report Share Posted November 30, 2011 UK Consumer Confidence Rises Marginally, Outlook Gloomy Confidence among British consumers increased slightly in November, but the ongoing turmoil in Europe and concerns of the UK economy sliding into recession are likely to weigh on consumer morale in the coming months, the latest survey results from research firm GfK NOP showed Wednesday. The headline consumer confidence index rose to -31 from October's -32, which was the weakest reading since February 2009. Economists expected a decline to -33. While it does reverse the decline of last month, what matters is the long term trend, and at the moment that still looks gloomy, said Nick Moon, Managing Director of GfK NOP Social Research. "Given the current crisis over the Eurozone, and the pessimism in the media about the likelihood of the British economy sliding back into recession next year, the one point increase in the index this month is a minor variation and doesn't indicate a significant change," Moon added. An expectation for the general economic situation over the next twelve months has decreased by two points to -33. The measure for the general economic situation of the country during the last twelve months has increased by one point to -61. The index measuring changes in personal finances during the last twelve months has increased one point to -23, while the forecast for personal finances in one year stayed the same at -10. Meanwhile, the major purchases measure increased five points this month to -27 but the 'now is a good time to save' index decreased three points to -13. "The one bright sign, which will certainly be welcomed on the high street, is the increase in the proportion of British consumers that think now is a good time for a major purchase," Moon noted. However, even this five point gain is doing little more than overturn the four point loss on the same measure last month, and the Index for making a major purchase remains heavily negative, he added. The latest Distributive Trades Survey from the Confederation of British Industry showed Monday that the U.K. high street sales volume declined for the sixth consecutive month in November. According to a survey by Nationwide released earlier this month, confidence among British consumers diminished to an all-time low in October as high unemployment and recession fears adversely affected sentiment. The latest official figures revealed that U.K. unemployment rate surged to a 15-year high after public sector cut jobs and private sector was forced to scale back job creation as business confidence weakened on fears of a sharp downturn in the economy. The Bank of England downgraded its growth outlook for 2012 to around 1 percent in its latest Inflation Report.
